Peter Berg says ‘Call of Duty’ movie will explore ‘the cost of war’ with serious tone
It sounds like Peter Berg’s upcoming “Call of Duty” movie will be an incredibly serious take on the video game franchise.
The upcoming film, which is being written by “Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan, is set to be released June 30, 2028.
Despite its distant release date, the Sheridan-Berg collaboration is already generating significant buzz.

That’s what happens when there’s already a baked-in and loyal audience tied to the video game series.
The absolute last thing anyone wants to see from Berg and Sheridan is a war movie that is anything less than gritty and excellent. After all, we’re talking about the man who made “Lone Survivor” (Berg) and the man responsible for the “Sicario” saga (Sheridan).
It sounds like that’s exactly what fans will be receiving in 2028.
“So modern warfare, if you really look at the missions, and the storylines, and the characters — like Captain Price, and Soap, and Ghost, and Alex — these are complicated humans,” Berg explained. “These are not — and no disrespect — cartoon characters or comic books. These are very nuanced storylines; like, there’s a real soul to the Modern Warfare universe… And, yes, there’s violence, and there’s hardware, and equipment, and there’s killing — but underneath it I think the game, and the craters of the game, are really looking at the cost of war, the cost of having to be a warrior who’s, for whatever reason, chosen to put himself between real danger and the rest of us, and the burden that these guys carry,” Berg explained to ComicBook.com when discussing the upcoming movie.

Berg also touched on Taylor Sheridan penning the script for the movie and bringing realism and a serious soul.
The “Friday Night Lights” director continued, “And that’s real stuff. This is not just ‘Hey, let’s shoot them all up and shoot popcorn!’ Like, there’s a soul underneath it, that I understand that Taylor Sheridan understands, and I think probably not quite as graphically violent as Mosquito Bowl, but there will be a very strong soul, and consequence of war within the film, called ‘duty.’”
This is the exact kind of tone and tempo people have come to expect from Berg and Sheridan. Two Hollywood titans linking up is bound to yield some impressive results, but fans will have to dig in and wait until 2028. Let me know your hopes for the film at Da*************@*****ck.com.
